Adventures in Virginia:Kings Dominion

Wow, it's been forever. I have had tons to blog about but I keep forgetting or I don't have time to get on here. oh well.

Today we celebrated our independence by visiting King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. Christopher and I have both visited this theme parks as kids/teens and we had fond memories so we were looking forward to visiting while we  are here in VA. When we saw that they were offering free admission to military and discounted tickets to family members we decided that it was the perfect way to spend the Fourth. We had lots of big plans for roller coaster and the splash park. We packed a cooler, swimsuits, and our diaper bag and we were off!

First thing we found out that is that Wesley is only 44 inches tall and at King's Dominion that means he can't ride about 90% of the coasters there. No Grizzly. No Rebel Yell. No water rafting ride. No Volcano Blast coaster. No Dominator, no Shock Wave. No fun. Especially when your child who is SO excited to ride a coaster is in tears because he keeps getting told that he can't ride.

We spent a lot of time on the "Ghoster Coaster" (the old Scooby Doo roller coaster for those who are old school). And we did the Avalanche and the Ricochet (which has the be the scariest coaster I have ever been on because I was about 99% sure either Wesley or I was going to be flung out and fall down to our death several times during the ride). We had a great time at the water park (even though, event here he could only go on ONE flume ride. Lame.). We did go on other rides (no bumper cars as, again, he is not 48 inches tall yet). He loved the log/flume ride. I guess I can't complain too much since we had such a great discount on tickets. I sure felt bad for parents who paid full price for a ticket and then found out their 44 inch child could not ride most of the rides. But I won't go back unless it is an adult only trip or until all our children are over the height of 48 inches.

Christopher and I did have a great time trying to remember all the rides and stuff that used to be there. No more Hanna-Barbera charachters but lots of Sponge Bob and Minions. Smurf Mountain is gone (SO sad!) and so is the Haunted River that used to be in the mountain there. The Yogi Bear/Flintstones cave (we couldn't remember which one) is now a "Treasure Cave" (which was still cool). Scooby Doo/Ghoster Coaster is no longer lime green, but is now painted blue.

It's a great park for teens/adults but not great for kids. Glad we didn't go for a season pass. We are looking forward to going to Williamsburg, altough we will defnitely be bringing a grandparent (or two) along to help out with Henry (who did GREAT, BTW, hardly fussed even though he didn't nap and it was crazy hot-he loved the splash area...and that was about all he could do there). We would love to do some coasters with Wesley (the two of us plus Wesley).

Oh, and I forget our camera, so no pictures. Even the two I took on my phone did not turn out. Oh well. Maybe next time.
